THE DERBY TRIATHLON is now in its 17th year and has seen over 10,000 competitors over the years take part. The event is aimed at all levels of fitness and ability, whether it's your first triathlon or you are the next Olympic hopeful. You can enter as an individual and complete all three disciplines on your own, the relay event with friends or colleagues and enjoy the race as a team or the corporate event where each team member (of three) completes the full triathlon.
Triathlon is a multi-discipline event where people compete against the clock and each other. Swimming, cycling and running with no break except for the transition (this is a quick pit stop to change for the next discipline).
Infomation for beginners
The Derby Triathlon is the most ideal event for first time competitors. Last year over 50% of the field had never completed a triathlon. For the swim any stroke is permitted including breaststroke and even back stroke and the swim times vary from 6 minutes (for the faster athletes) up to 30 minutes (for the people just out to have an enjoyable day). All you need is a swimming costume or trunks, goggles (not compulsory), a bike (road or mountain bike as long as it is in roadworthy condition), a cycle helmet (this is compulsory) and a pair of trainers.

This years entries will close when the race limit of 800 is reached or September 7th 2008 which ever comes first. To avoid disappointment please enter early as the event has been known to fill before the closing date.
Your start time will be determined by the swim time on your entry form. Please be as accurate as possible so that you will be swimming with people of similar ability
Start times will be listed on this site around 2 weeks before the event (earlier if capacity is reached), your start time is dependant on your swimming ability with slower swimmers (20-30 minutes) going off at the start of the day (around 8am) and the fastest swimmers (5-6 minutes) starting around 12-1 pm depending on numbers, with increasingly faster swimmers setting off as the day progresses.
To start the event you must swim 16 lengths of the-25m indoor heated swimming pool (any stroke is fine) and then you make your way to the transition area and prepare for the bike ride.
After completing the swim you will then jump on your bike for l8K around Derbyshire's country lanes. The route is a single lap, which is mostly flat with a couple of gentle hills.
Once the bike has been completed you then return to transition for the run, this is an out and back 5K run, through Etwall.

This is open to anyone over the age of 15 (on 31/12/08). You must complete all three disciplines with no outside assistance. Your time will be taken from when you start the swim to when you finish the run.
The relay triathlon
Each member of the team completes one discipline.
The first member swims 400m and runs out to tag the cyclist who then runs through transition completes the 18K bike, on their return the cyclist runs through transition reracking their bike, to tag the runner who goes on to complete the 5K run to finish the event.
